Tecnalia resulted from the merger of eight R&D centres: Cidemco, ESI, Euve, Fatronik, Inasmet, Labein, Leia and Robotiker, thereby creating the largest private Research, Development and Innovation (R+D+i) group in Spain and one of the largest in Europe, with a staff of over 1,500 and a turnover of approximately 125 million €.
Tecnalia's unique characteristics include: its private nature; the focussing of its activity on Applied Research; that it is a centre of international excellence (international R+D contracts, foreign researchers, and international accompaniment of local industries, licences, IP, etc.); the impact it has on local industry (R+D and Innovation projects with companies, spin offs, training, E+C services); its openness; and that it has become a centre that attracts people who want to develop their creativity, and organisations (networks) keen to interact and co-generate knowledge with Tecnalia.
Tecnalia is organised into Business Units grouped into five Divisions. This structure encourages co-operation, multidisciplinarity and transversality in its response to technology challenges that require integrated, global, highly specialised approaches. The synergies resulting from Tecnalia's reinforce its capacities and broaden its network of contacts as well as multiply its competitiveness and effectiveness.
